Having self-control is one of the best ways to show others that you are a Christian and to open the door to talking to them about salvation. It is one of the most important fruits of the Spirit, as it protects people from making mistakes they will regret. Being self-controlled makes you more mature and wiser. It will help you control your mouth, your anger, and your other bad habits. Self-control is your guard against evil, bad desires, and impulses. A person without self-control will be punished for his actions, so by exercising self-control, you will protect yourself, act more godly, and be wiser.

In the New Testament, it is evident that self-control is also necessary to evangelize to others. Self-control isn’t just something we should practice when people see us. It should be practiced everywhere, so that we can be sure that we’ll act in a Christian manner when something unexpected happens. You may also have a problem with controlling what you say. The book of James says that the tongue is very hard to tame, which is why you need to dwell on some Bible verses and practice self-control very frequently, so that you can be an excellent representative of Christ.

Self-control verses:

James 3:8-10 KJV: “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.”

Proverbs 25:28 KJV: “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”

Proverbs 13:3 KJV: “He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.”

2 Timothy 4:5 CSB: “But as for you, exercise self-control in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

1 Peter 1:13 CSB: “So prepare your minds for service and have self-control. All your hope should be for the gift of grace that will be yours when Jesus Christ is shown to you.”

Proverbs 15:1 KJV: “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

Galatians 5:22-23 KJV: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
