There are three major types of fears mentioned in the Bible. First of all, is the fear of the Lord. We are to fear God, in the sense that we are to acknowledge that he is our creator and master. We aren’t to question his judgement, word, or anything else. We should fear him in a similar way that we should fear our parents or boss. As matter of fact, the fear of the Lord is compared to these fears in the Bible.

The second type of fear that exists is fear of sin. This is another type of fear that we should exhibit. We should fear breaking the commandments of God, and should fear his punishment. The fear of his punishment also makes us all the more grateful and thankful for his mercy.

The third type of fear that exists is fear of worldly things. This can range from ideas and traditions (Peter was afraid of eating pigs), to self-doubt (Moses doubted his own speaking ability, and refused to believe the Lord could use him), to fear of material things (such as people, animals, weapons), and finally, fear of death. We are to fear none of these things. These are what hurt our relationship with God, and hinder the completion of his will for our lives.
